Two phases for improvement works on A72
Published: Wednesday 24 June 2026
Essential improvement works will start on the A72 near Hazelbank from next week.
As a result, the A72 will be closed from west of the B7086 and Hazelbank.
In order to minimise disruption to local businesses and the travelling public, work will be undertaken in two phases to allow the road to reopen at the weekend.
Phase 1 will commence on Monday 29 June for five days to allow tree cutting and drainage work to take place. The tree cutting and drainage works are being undertaken in conjunction with the resurfacing as an important project to clear and improve the road corridor and the area immediately adjacent of this strategic section of the road network.
During this week the junction of the B7086 will remain open under traffic signals for Lanark-bound traffic.
Phase 2 will commence on Tuesday 7 July for four days to allow carriageway resurfacing work to be undertaken. During this phase the junction of the B7086 will be closed for the initial two days, after which it will reopen.
No vehicles, except those involved in the work and the emergency services, will be able to park or drive on the road during this time.
The signed diversion route for the A72 with utilise A72, A71, and A73.
The signed diversion route for the B7086 will utilise B7086, B7078, B7018 and A72.
Head of Roads, Transportation and Fleet Services, Colin Park, said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may occur during these essential road works.
“These drainage upgrades and tree trimming efforts form a key part of our long-term strategy to boost climate resilience along this vital route. By proactively addressing water runoff and reinforcing the surrounding roadside environment, the network will be far better equipped to withstand the increasingly frequent and severe weather events driven by climate change.
“We would request that all road users allow additional time for all journeys which involve the use of the A72 near Hazelbank during the period indicated and that they plan their journey accordingly.
“We are sure everyone will appreciate the improved condition of the road and its surroundings when the works are complete.”
